Cabinets Built to the Room, Not to a Catalog Width

A custom cabinet is built for one wall in one house. The shop measures the room, draws each box to the exact width, height and depth the space needs, and builds doors and panels to match. A semi-custom cabinet starts from a factory catalog of standard sizes, usually in three inch width steps, with a menu of modifications on top. Both can be very well made. The difference is where the dimensions come from.

That difference only matters in certain rooms, and we tell you plainly whether yours is one of them.

Where Custom Work Is Visible

Out of square walls and uneven ceilings. Plaster walls in older Corona del Mar and Newport Heights homes are rarely flat, and ceilings sag or step. A custom run is scribed to the wall and the ceiling line so the cabinet meets the surface tightly. A factory run meets it with a gap, and the gap gets covered with trim or a filler.

Filler strips. When a run of stock widths does not reach the wall, the leftover space gets a filler. One narrow filler at the end of a run is normal and nobody notices it. Several on a feature wall, or wide fillers beside the range and refrigerator, are the easiest way to spot a catalog kitchen.

Inset doors. Inset doors sit inside the face frame, flush with it, with a small even gap all the way around. Wood moves as humidity changes, so that gap has to be fitted by hand and adjusted after install. Few semi-custom lines offer true inset, and those that do build it to a looser tolerance. If you want inset, a custom shop is the honest recommendation.

Islands and end panels. An island is seen from every side. Custom panels can wrap the grain around a corner, hide the seams between boxes and hit an exact overall length so the countertop overhang and seating clearance work out. On a large open kitchen in Newport Coast, the island is usually the piece that earns the custom price.

Full height walls. Pantry walls, refrigerator surrounds with integrated panels and cabinets that run to a tall ceiling benefit from being built as one design rather than stacked from standard units.

Where It Usually Is Not

The cabinet box itself, the drawer box and the hardware can be matched on a good semi-custom line. Ask for plywood construction, dovetailed drawer boxes, full extension soft-close glides and quality hinges, and a semi-custom base cabinet will perform like a custom one for decades. Behind a closed door on a straight wall, nobody can tell. That is why many of our kitchens mix the two: semi-custom on the working walls, custom on the island or the pantry wall.

Construction Choices We Explain Up Front

• Framed or frameless. Framed cabinets have a face frame around the opening and suit traditional and inset doors. Frameless cabinets have no frame, give slightly more usable interior width and suit flat slab doors.
• Box material. Plywood holds screws better and tolerates moisture far better than particleboard. Near the water we specify plywood for sink bases at minimum.
• Finish. Painted finishes on solid wood can show hairline cracks at door joints as the wood moves. Painted MDF panels avoid that. We show both on sample doors.
• Hardware. Salt air pits plated hinges and pulls within a few years close to the harbor. Stainless or solid brass is worth it.

Lead Time and Schedule

Custom cabinets take longer. Expect roughly ten to sixteen weeks from signed drawings to delivery, depending on the shop’s queue and the finish.
